At Plaza del Almirante, 1, you will find the majestic Palace House of the Admiral of Aragon, built by Leonor Manrique in the 16th century, it transports you to the elegance of stately Christian architecture in the heart of the Alcazaba Cadima neighbourhood, after the conquest.
This building named after the illustrious Admiral Francisco de Mendoza, houses the living history of Granada. In 1874, it was transformed into the San José Asylum, a home for the education of poor children. The façade features the inscription “Home of San José” and the arched windows narrate the building’s adaptation to this noble purpose.
Over the course of the 19th and 20th centuries, the interior underwent several transformations, and today, the space has evolved into a diaphanous courtyard enclosed by glass windows, blending historical richness with modernity. The Admiral’s Palace has been temporarily ceded by the City Council to the University of Granada, to complement the cultural offering provides by the “Casa de Porras” University Cultural Centre.
