Why is the day of the cross celebrated?
It is an ancient celebration that has its roots in a religious event narrating how the cross on which Christ died was found by Saint Helena. Over time, this cross underwent successive mutilations, causing numerous fragments to reach various corners of the world. A piece of the supposed cross of Christ arrived in Granada, specifically in the Albaicín, at the convent of Santa Isabel la Real. The legend takes center stage here, as it tells how, on a Friday during Lent, the nuns of the convent heard voices coming from a wall. They ordered a demolition and found a piece of the cross of Christ inside the wall.
Thus, throughout the history of Granada, several festivals have been celebrated in honor of the Holy Cross, with periods of great splendor and others of decline, especially at the end of the nineteenth century.
