Do you know the origin of the Tarasca?
The origin of La Tarasca comes from the legend in which the protagonist is Saint Martha. La Tarasca is a mythological creature. According to the story, this creature lived in Tarascon. It is said that it was a monster feared by everyone, even the King of Tarascon himself, who had attacked La Tarasca with all his troops and arsenal, but without success. Then the character of Saint Martha appears, who enchanted the monster with her prayers, and one day she appeared in the city with the tamed beast, riding on it. The terrified inhabitants attacked the creature at nightfall, and it died there without offering any resistance. Then Saint Martha preached a sermon to the people and converted many to Christianity. La Tarasca is an allegory of the triumph of good over evil, and its name comes from the French region of Tarascon, where the festival originated in the 14th century. According to historians, its presence in the city’s festivities dates back to the time of the Catholic Monarchs, who wanted the Corpus Christi festival to be the main celebration in Granada.
