Acera del Casino
Between Puerta Real and Plaza del Campillo. there was originally, a section of the wall that connected Puerta del Rastro and Bib-ataubín Castle. During the 16th and 17th centuries, this area was known as “Redonda” or “Rondilla del Darro” and gained a reputation as a meeting place for shady characters. This atmosphere led to the popular nickname “Acera de los Valientes.”
Over time, shacks were established in the area where prostitution was practiced, creating the “Barrio de la Manigua”, which disappeared in the 1940s due to urban renewal carried out by the City Council.
In the 19th century, the wall was demolished and several houses were built in its place. One of these houses became the city’s main casino, which eventually gave its name to the street “Acera del Casino”. This street combines history, culture and urban evolution in one place.
