The Gomérez slope.
This steep street connects Plaza Nueva with the Alhambra grounds. Its name and old neighborhood are linked to a generation of Africans from the mountains of Vélez de la Gomera who came to serve in the militia. Throughout its history, this street housed the tower and gate of “Bib Alauxar,” part of the wall that connected the Torres Bermejas with the Alhambra. During the reign of Charles V, this gate was replaced by the current Gate of the Pomegranates, named for the pomegranates sculpted in its decoration from the nineteenth century.
