The Romanilla Square
The Romanilla Square, located in the heart of the city between Capuchinas and San Jerónimo, is a place with a fascinating history. In this space, previously occupied by an irregular street, there was a central market where meat and vegetable stalls predominated. Here, various merchants offered a wide variety of products, and interestingly, next to this market was a municipal office that had several functions, one of which was to ensure the accuracy of the weight of the goods that buyers purchased.
The peculiarity was that this office used a small balance scale, or “romanilla,” to weigh the purchased products. If the results showed that the correct amount had not been dispensed, buyers had the opportunity to file complaints. Thus, in addition to being a lively trading place, the Romanilla Square served as a quality control center for the products sold in the market. This blend of commerce and oversight makes it a corner with a unique history in the heart of the city.
